Fun! While the program teaches children the skills necessary to excel in the sport of volleyball, the focus remains on participation, cooperation, sportsmanship, responsibility and, of course, fun!

Action! Strength, endurance and improved coordination result from the weekly activity of the program. Furthermore, a season of league games is sure to provide plenty of exciting volleyball action.

Skills! Skills are taught using technically correct methods for peak performance and safety.

Teamwork! The USYVL is a family-oriented program where parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends are strongly encouraged to become involved. Parents and volunteers assist with coaching, registration, check-in and equipment set-up.

Jaena’s Love for Volleyball, Next Stop, Louisiana Tech!

USYVL Happenings, February 2021-1499952396
By Jaena Bell I started playing with USYVL when I was 7 years old when a few of my friends from school all decided to sign up. I barely knew anything about volleyball but the welcoming and safe environment encouraged me to get out there and try my best. I ended up loving it right away, and with each practice, I was excited to get better and have fun with my new friends and teammates. This program teaches the meaning of true sportsmanship and definitely values the importance of participation, which is important especially at a young age. I liked USYVL because it embodies a pressure free environment where a child like myself could make mistakes, learn and grow.  I was able to develop better self-esteem, improve my overall communication, and understand the responsibility required to be part of a team. I also met a lifelong friend on my first team at USYVL, and we have been playing together ever since.
“This organization gave me my undying love for the sport of volleyball.”

I am forever grateful for the unforgettable memories I made with my teammates, coaches and friends during my time at USYVL. The fundamental skills I developed prepared me to make my first competitive club team at 11 years old. More than anything, this organization gave me my undying love for the sport of volleyball. I have carried this love with me through all of my club teams and will continue to carry it with me in college. I currently play the 18s division at Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club and attend Saint Anthony High School.  I will be playing Division 1 college volleyball next fall at Louisiana Tech University on a full scholarship. My wonderful experience with USYVL introduced me to the sport I love.

Skills Clinics Sharpen Your Skills

USYVL Happenings, February 2021-1817453618
We were excited to offer four Winter Volleyball Clinics in Aliso Viejo in January and February! The one-day two hour clinics were for all skill  levels. We had an amazing turnout, filling up each clinic to capacity. Our Clinician was able to focus on the fundamentals of spiking, setting and serving and make sure that each participant had the specialized drills and help they needed. One-day clinics allow players to keep their skills sharp and focus on a few individualized drills to enhance specific skills personalized to each player. Volleyball clinics are run by a local Clinician/s (Volleyball Instructor/s). If you are interested in running a clinic in your area, please contact us. We are happy to look into running a volleyball clinic in your community!

by Steve Anderson Hand Setting Hand Positioning Hands should form a square or rectangle, with index fingers and thumbs on the volleyball, which should give you symmetry. Place the ball above your forehead and as you push it upward, evenly with both hands, you will let it go with both hands at the same time to achieve symmetry. To see this in action go to www.usyvl.org and click on the yellow banner VOLLEYBALL PRO TIPS. You can view the complete series on hand setting from Olympic Gold Medal Coach, Steve Anderson.

nothing but skills

USYVL Happenings, January 2021-1763099995

With Covid-19 guidelines and following local and state safety and health precautions, we were able to pull together a handful of volleyball clinics in select locations to get kids out on the court and moving.

Thanks to all our players and their families for our successful fall and winter volleyball skills clinics! A special thank you to our Clinicians for making these volleyball clinics happen and for their extra attention to safety, all while making sure our participants continue to grow in their skills and have fun!

With many fields and facilities remaining closed through the winter season, we are thankful for those few that were able to allow safe skill development. Check out our website to see if there is a volleyball program starting near you!

growing the game

USYVL Happenings, January 2021-731637786

Though 2020 was a tough year especially in youth sports, growing the game of volleyball still remains a goal. As we look forward to 2021, we are working on bringing programs to communities that currently don't have a USYVL program. Skill & Development Camps & Clinics will be opening in Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Utah, Minnesota and Arizona. If you have friends and family in other states or cities, have them check-out our website and see where the closest USYVL program is. You can even reach out to us and see about the possibility of bringing volleyball to your community!

Reese inspires millions during covid

USYVL Happenings, January 2021-397738743

Prior to the coronavirus, Reese never utilized any social media platforms, rare for a teenager. She was busy playing volleyball. A sophomore, she is a second-year varsity volleyball player at Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park, KS.  She also plays indoor on the Topeka Impact 16-1 Volleyball Club and Beach at P4:13 Beach Club. When the virus shut down the sport she loves, Reese decided to take a new approach to challenge herself and hopefully inspire others in the volleyball world.

She decided to start posting volleyball drills & athletic training drills in her garage gym to not only get better at her sport and to try to have a “normal” schedule/routine, but to inspire and reach other volleyball players and athletes. Reese created an Instagram and Twitter account in March 2020 and has made over 200 posts since. She now has generated over 1,300,000 views on Twitter and over 250,000 views on Instagram since March.

She utilized the coronavirus shut down to push herself and inspire thousands of other athletes across the world. She was even asked to interview Kerri Walsh Jennings this summer and was invited to Kerri and Brooke Sweat's (OLYMPIC Beach Volleyball team) clinic in December. One of her posts was reposted and has almost 400,000 views.  She also looks up to Oregon indoor & beach vb standout Brooke Nuneviller as she had a similar path to Reese.

"Do today what others won't, so you can do tomorrow what others can't."

The Overhand Serve

As the non-hitting hand is coming up to toss the ball, the hitting hand is pulling back towards their ear. The ball must leave the player's hand when that arm is parallel to the ground. (Image 1)

The hand needs to be canted slightly toward the hitting hand so it comes down right in front of that player's hitting/serving shoulder. Use a full arm swing. (Image 2)

Back foot, on the hitting arm side, can raise up to toes, but should not leave the ground before contact of the ball. After contact of the ball, the back foot may leave the ground at the end of the follow through. (Image 3)

olympic watch

USYVL Happenings, January 2021-1597907649

Let's get ready for the 2020 Summer Olympics! Action starts on Friday, July 23, 2021 in Tokyo.

In Women's Beach Volleyball team Alix Klineman and April Ross have secured the first spot for the USA! The second spot is a tight race between two teams, team Kerri Walsh and Brooke Sweat and team Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil. Keep an eye out on who will make it to the Olympics, which will be determined by results in FIVB tournaments prior to the Tokyo Olympics. In Men's Beach Volleyball there is a very close race between three teams, team Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb, team Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena and team Trevor Crabb and Tri Bourne.  This is going to be a battle to the end to determine the top two USA teams going to the Olympics for Men’s Beach Volleyball.

In Men’s Indoor Volleyball our team is lead by one of the best players in the world, Matt Anderson and a team of very talented players. In Women’s Indoor Volleyball our team is lead by Foluke Akinradewo, one of the best middles in the sport, and a team of talented players. At the 2016 Olympics both teams took bronze, so they are looking for gold!

Tuesday, December 1st is GivingTuesday!

Don’t know what GivingTuesday is? GivingTuesday is a global day of giving focused on celebrating generosity and unity.

This year, we are participating in GivingTuesday, and we need your help.

We invite you to donate to USYVL on Tuesday, December 1. You can support our organization by donating on our website. Donations help us continue to provide opportunities for youth to build confidence, learn transferrable skills like teamwork and good sportsmanship, and have fun playing volleyball.

Last year, we were able to raise more than $25,000, which helped us lead more than 85 programs across the United States.

Here’s how you can get ready to give:
  • 1. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Dec. 1
  • 2. Give online at usyvl.org/donate on GivingTuesday
  • 3. Spread the word with your community
  • Together we can change the lives of youth in our community, and across the United States.

Read a story from one of our participants: Our daughter has never liked anything athletic. Her friend told her how much fun she was having so we decided to try it. This was our second season and she still has some fear of the ball but, she loves every minute of it and the people she meets. Her first year she had the opportunity to join her friends’ team due to some kids who did not show up. But, after the first practice session she had on her original team, she didn’t want to leave them to be on her best friend’s team because she liked her teammates and coach. USYVL for the win!

We can’t wait to partner with you on GivingTuesday and watch our community change for the better. Thank you for helping us positively impact the lives of over 7000 boys and girls last year.

September marks the beginning of USYVL’s Skill Development Clinics. This season, USYVL’s Clinicians (trained volleyball instructors) are leading skill development clinics that are taylored to meet the local Health Department’s requirements for Covid-19 safety while working to improve your player’s abilities through training and practice.

We are excited to have a new location begin with many smiling faces in Cache Valley, Utah!*
